These 21 States See an Alarming COVID Spike

On Tuesday, the first day of fall, America hit a grim milestone in the COVID-19 pandemic, passing the 200,000 mark of lives lost as a result of being infected with coronavirus. While the number of infections, deaths, and fateful testing positivity rate started dropping in many states across the nation over the summer, health experts have continued to warn that fall and winter could bring a host of new complications—including the introduction of cold and flu season, the falling temperatures bringing people indoors, and children and young adults returning to school —all of which could easily result in an upward trend. And, according to the latest statistics from Johns Hopkins University we are already starting to experience it. The Spike is Likely Caused by Labor Day

The spike in cases comes just weeks after Labor Day—which health experts such as Dr. Anthony Fauci warned could result in more infections—and also over a month after many students returned to college. Outbreaks have been rampant at colleges and universities around the country, spawning a spike of infections in and around the towns and cities they are located.

Dr. Fauci warns that it has never been more crucial to get the baseline of infections down.

“We’re entering into the fall and into the winter, and that means there’s going to be more indoor things than outdoor things,” he warned on Tuesday during the Atlantic Festival. “Going into that situation, I would like to have seen the baseline of where we are—the daily number of infections —come way, way down, and not be stuck at around 30 to 40,000 per day.”
